The Marathon has been a sport since the beginning of the modern Olympics in 1896, in honor of ancient Greece and the legend of Pheidippodes, a Greek messenger. The legend is that after the battle of Marathon, in which the Athenians defeated the Persians, Pheidippodes ran the 26 miles from Marathon to Athens to announce the victory and warn the Athenians of a possible Persian attack.
The marathon and half marathon at the 2014 Gay Games will be run in Akron through the streets of the city. Gay Games 9 expects over 600 runners of all skill levels to take part in this challenging event.
